-=LAMAR MUNICIPAL AIRPORT=-
The Lamar Municipal Airport is approximately four miles west of Lamar on approximately 640 acres of City owned land. A private Fixed Base Operator (FBO) serves as an informational source for the public, manages flight related matters, does aircraft maintenance, sells fuel from a City owned fuel farm, and operates a private charter service at the airport. The airport offers a comfortable pilots' lounge and courtesy car rentals.

There are two runways, five taxiways, an apron for aircraft parking, maintenance hangars, T-hangars, abundant tie-down space, automated weather service, an unmanned fire station, a variety of navigational aids, and a fuel farm at the Lamar Municipal Airport. The primary runway (north/south 18/36) is concrete (7" in depth) measuring 6,304 feet in length by 100 feet in width, and will support daily flights of 55,000 pound dual wheel gear aircraft. The runway can accommodate some business jets and executive aircraft and a wide variety of other commercial and private aircraft. The cross wind runway (east/west 08/26) is 5,001 feet in length by 60 feet in width with an asphalt surface.

Lamar Municipal Airport is very important to the aviation industry because of its low elevation. It has the only all-weather instrument runway in the southeast corner of the state. The airport service area includes seven counties (Prowers, Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Crowley, Otero).

There is currently a scheduled "on demand" air service operated by Southeast Colorado Air Service that has shuttle flights to Denver International Airport. Southeast Colorado Air Service is based out of the Lamar Municipal Airport and can be reached at (719) 336-7701.

Operations at the airport are approximately 16,500 per year. The airport is operated as a General Aviation (GA) airport and utilized by private (non-scheduled) aircraft. Flight for Life utilizes the airport routinely due to its location, navigational aids, and its all-weather instrument runways. Airfreight comes into Lamar twice daily.

Between 1985 and 2003, the Federal Aviation Administration invested $4,818,541.65 for airport improvements. The State of Colorado has invested an additional $87,733.19 in discretionary grants for improvements and the City of Lamar has invested $429,181 in annual maintenance, grant matches, in-kind service and equipment. The airport is in excellent condition due to funds spent on the infrastructure and maintenance.

Recently, Lamar updated its air service study and business plan. We are currently working with our airport consultants to update the airport layout and master plans. Updating the plans entails inventory, forecasts, facility requirements, plan concepts, plan drawing, financial plan, capital improvement plans, passenger and cargo market and business and strategic planning. To assure FAA compliance, airport air space, radar coverage, approaches, minimums and other safety issues are being examined and modified or updated as needed. In addition, the study is evaluating both the GPS and ILS systems to improve safety and airport design standards.

Some of the recent activities at the Lamar Municipal Airport include: Annual Planes to Plains Fly-In, parachuting and skydiving events and Women's Classic Air Race. On occasion, the military utilizes the airport for training purposes.

The surrounding area offers hunting, fishing, boating, bird watching, camping, and wildlife refuges. There is a nine-hole golf course, two fitness centers, an outdoor swimming pool, a bowling alley, a stock car raceway, and a motor sports park for dirt bikes in or near the City. Historical sites located within a short driving distance include the Santa Fe Trail, Big Timbers Museum, Camp Amache (Japanese WWII relocation camp), Bents Fort, Sand Creek Native American Memorial, and local WPA/CCC construction. Shopping is available at a large 24-hour discount center and numerous home-owned stores and shops.
