Building Safety Department

• ISSUE CONTRACTOR’S LICENSE
Investigate for license requirements
Track liability insurance and compensation insurance due dates
Keep updates on new methods and materials allowed in construction, and code
changes
Collect all appropriate fees
Investigate any complaints on licensed contractors

• ISSUE PERMITS
Make sure all tap fees are paid
Insure compliance with all Zoning requirements
Do plan reviews
Collect all appropriate fees

• INSPECTIONS
Thoroughly inspect all phases of jobs for compliance to the different code
disciplines
Issue stop work orders on jobs which do not comply with the applicable codes or
have no permit
Educate the general public and contractors about the different codes

Codes Department

• CITIZEN CONCERNS
Take action on all concerns expressed to the department regarding alleged
violations of City codes dealing with weeds, junk, junk vehicles, trash, debris, and
other codes adopted by the City of Lamar

• INSPECTIONS
To make contact with the general public and educate them as to the regulations in
the code

• VIOLATIONS
To issue verbal, written, or certified notices on any violations found
Do reinspections to check for compliance
To work with the police department and serve offenders if there is no other way to
attain compliance
To represent the City in court if necessary

OTHER DUTIES

• To serve as first contact for development in the city
• To serve as planning and zoning administrator
(Hold public hearings on zoning changes)
• To serve as representative of the city on the appeals and adjustments board for zoning
 (Hold public meetings on application of appeal)
• To serve as representative of the city on the variance board for building codes and the other code disciplines
• To work with other city departments in writing specifications for buildings projects for the city
 (i.e. The Yellow Field – The Bath house at the pool)
• To issue flood plain permits and administer the N.F.I.P. program
• To represent the City of Lamar as the officer for the Americans with Disabilities Act for physical barriers
• To do structural evaluation after a fire or other type of damage.
• Review new codes for adoption by the city.
• Inspect buildings on requests by owners or tenants on possible substandard buildings and condemn for demolition or repair as needed.
• Work with local departments
(i.e. Adult Protection and Health Department) to do inspections requested by them.
