Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves as Incident Commander in the absence of a higher-ranking officer at the scene of any emergency responded to by the Lamar Fire and Ambulance Services. Provides 24-hour shift coverage for missing fire engineer staff. Must have excellent leadership qualities, verbal and written communication skills and be a team player. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, all other departments, other governmental agencies, and the public. Work varies requiring some interpretive judgment within prescribed standards and procedures. The Fire Captain shall be able to serve as Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Engineer as required. It is therefore understood that the job descriptions of the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Engineer shall apply to the Fire Captain as well.
Minimum Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Six years of experience in firefighting, including advanced level (EMT-Intermediate pre-hospital EMS experience; two years’ experience as a fire engineer driver/operator pumping apparatus and aerial apparatus operations; hazardous materials operations level training; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Possess a valid Colorado driver’s license, EMT-Intermediate. Firefighter 1 certification. Hazardous Materials Awareness certification. Fire Service Proctor. ACLS. Bilingual is helpful but not required. Laterals accepted.
Position requires physical involvement; involves walking and standing; primary responsibilities for this position will take place either in a standard office environment or on assigned sites. Work involves exposure to heat, noise, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, solvents, pesticides or herbicides, undesirable weather conditions and potentially unsafe conditions. Proper safety equipment should be used where undesirable physical conditions and hazards exists, to prevent injury.
