Position Objectives:

This is a paraprofessional library work reporting to and assisting the Library Director in performing librarian duties, programs, services, and basic clerical duties associated with a library. May be responsible for a major department in the library, such as children’s services. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to working at the circulation desk, assisting patrons, assisting in library organization and assisting in book accessioning and database maintenance.  This person must have the ability to work solo inside and outside of the library. Performs other duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  •          Plan, organize, and present programs as directed inside and outside the library with minimal supervision.

  •          Assist in the development and administration of the Summer Reading Program by preparing displays, publicizing the program, maintaining records and presenting awards. 

  •          Assist with conducting story time by reading stories to children and preparing activities. 

  •          Prepare reading lists and materials for children and families.

  •          Supervise volunteers and substitutes when the library director or designated supervisor is not available. 

  •          Assume some collection development responsibilities under the direction of the library director or designated supervisor.

  •          Identify and recommend improvements to the library director to ensure support functions are cost-effective, efficient and safe. 

  •          Assist patrons in locating, selecting and researching materials, both in print and online sources.  Refer patrons to additional resources as necessary.  Assist patrons in the use of computers, library equipment, databases                    including the library catalog, and the Internet.

  •          Handle the duties of the circulation desk such as, but not limited to, checking out and renewing materials, checking in returned materials and collecting fines if necessary, issuing and/or renewing library cards, and maintaining          attendance records. 

  •          Return materials to shelves accurately and in a timely manner, and ensure that shelves are maintained in an orderly and organized manner, including periodic weeding of older books and periodic reading of the shelves.

  •          Prepare regular displays for the library.

Minimum Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent with a minimum of four years' experience or two years' experience plus two years of related college coursework.

Excellent communication and computer skills.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Working knowledge of library organization and procedures including the Dewey Decimal System.

Bachelor's degree in a related subject preferred.
